A Brief History of The Institution

The concept of establishing a law college in Karimganj was conceived by a few dignitaries of the Karimganj in the ending months of 1984. The first General Meeting was held in 12th November, 1984 in Circuit House Karimganj. and the idea of establishment of a law college crystallized into the formation of a sponsoring committee in the name of Shreebhumi Law College Sponsoring Committee which was entrusted with the task of establishment of a college of legal education in Karimganj.

The second substantial step was taken on 29th January 1985 by organizing a meeting by the Bar Association, Karimganj in the Bar Library which was presided over by D. N. Bhattacharjee, the then Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj. The meeting dissolved the predecessor sponsoring committee and established a new sponsoring committee with a larger number of members from the Bar and from the general public. The General Meeting decided the name of the institution as Karimganj Law College on the basis of majority opinion after prolonged discussion and different opinions. This General Meeting, after finalization of the name of the institution, formed a new Sponsoring Committee with for establishment of Karimganj Law College.

The First meeting of the Sponsoring Committee Karimganj Law College, was held in the chamber of Shree D. N. Bhattacharjee, the President of the Sponsoring Committee, K.L.C. [Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj] The meeting resolved to constitute an authority for the college in the name of ‘Steering Committee of Karimganj Law College’ to discharge all executive function of the college and proceed with the institutional activity of the college.

Thus, the first Steering Committee, of Karimganj Law College was constituted with the following dignitaries.

The meeting discussed the necessity of opening up a bank account of the college and resolved to open a saving bank account with the State Bank of India in Karimganj Branch. It also resolved to proceed with the academic affiliation of the college with the Gauhati University and professional approval of the institution with the Bar Council of India. Late Shree Shephal Ghosh donated Rs. 1000 as an expense for the first affiliation.

The Karimganj Law College conducted its academic activities in a specific part of Karimganj College where evening classes were conducted with practicing lawyers who worked as part-time teachers due to scarcity of eligible full-time teachers having LL.M. degree for a long period of more than two decades. Many eminent lawyers worked as a lecturer of this college. Late Md. Mohbuboor Rahman (a member of the District Bar Association) worked as the founding Principal of the college and under his able leadership the Karimganj Law College succeeded in availing a plot of land and its possession leading to a permanent building structure over the allotted land and the activity was shifted to its premise.
